Tales from a Hospice Dog Mom: How We Reverse-Age Our Super-Senior Dogs in 7 Steps
September 17, 2025 By Anna W.
When my husband and I tell people what we do, we usually get one of two reactions:
“Oh my gosh, I could never do that. It would break my heart.”
Or…
“Wait, you actually foster hospice dogs?!”
Yes we do. And yes, it can be heartbreaking.
But it's also one of the most rewarding things we've ever done.
Because here’s the thing: these “unadoptable” senior dogs—some blind, some toothless, some arthritic—are still full of life.
They just need the right kind of care to help restore their health.
And when they get that care, something incredible happens…
They start to “reverse age”—regaining the health and mobility that allows them to enjoy their twilight years.
Meet Lucy, Our 14-Year-Old Cavalier
In 2018, we took in a tiny Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Lucy. She was 14 years old, overweight, and had a mouth full of rotting teeth.
Everyone assumed she only had a few months left to live. (Which, of course, is why she ended up in hospice to begin with.)
But with the right changes, Lucy’s health turned around in dramatic fashion.
Her skin issues cleared up. She had more energy. Her appetite came back.
And guess what?
This dog that was “on the brink of death” ended up living to be 18 years old.
So how did we do it? I'll tell you exactly how.
Our 7-Step "Reverse Aging" Protocol for Super-Senior Dogs
Over the years, we’ve fine-tuned a system that helps these dogs feel younger, longer. Here are the 7 steps we follow with every single hospice pup.
When you put all these pieces together, the results are astonishing.
1) Address skin issues immediately
Almost every senior we take in has itchy, inflamed skin. Left untreated, that chronic irritation drags their whole immune system down.
Treat their skin issues ASAP.
2) Remove infected teeth
Dental infections spread harmful bacteria through the bloodstream, triggering inflammation in the heart, kidneys, and joints.
A dental cleaning (or even extractions) can give dogs an instant health boost.
3) Feed a high-protein diet
It never made sense to us why “senior” dog food formulas are so low in protein, considering the fact that muscle loss is one of the biggest factors in aging.
That’s why we switch our dogs to a high-quality, high-protein food.
4) Daily exercise (yes, daily!)
Movement is medicine. Even if it’s a short walk around the block, consistent activity is non-negotiable.
5) Get to a healthy weight
A lot of the seniors we get are overweight, which makes arthritis and heart issues worse. Helping these dogs to lean down can shave years off their biological age.
6) Breed-appropriate mental stimulation
Seniors may move slower, but their brains are still hungry. For a Cavalier, that might be gentle scent games. For a Shepherd, light training or puzzle toys. Whatever it is, do something to keep them engaged—both for brain health and for enjoyment.
7) Reduce joint inflammation & pain
Arthritis is rampant in senior dogs. If you don’t get inflammation under control, pain limits their mobility—and their health spirals downward.
So how do you reduce inflammation in dogs?
The Missing Link: Fighting Inflammation From the Inside Out
We realized early on that all of our steps had one common thread: inflammation.
Inflammation is behind all the most common health issues we see in the dogs that get sent to hospice, including…
-
Itchy skin
-
Painful joints
-
Organ decline
The flipside of this, however, means that if you can reduce inflammation in super-senior dogs, they don’t just survive…
They thrive.
When we realized this, we started adding one more piece to our routine—WINPRO Pet Plasma Chews.
WINPRO is the only line of dog supplements powered by real blood plasma, which is an ingredient rich in immunoglobulins and antibodies that naturally fight inflammation from inside the body.
There are several different formulas available:
-
Allergy Chews for skin issues
-
Hip & Joint Chews for mobility
-
Immune Chews for overall vitality
Each of these fantastic formulas is high in the most important ingredient of blood plasma, which means they ALL help manage your dog's inflammation from the inside-out.
Regardless of which version you choose, I can't recommend them highly enough if you want to help make sure your dog stays healthy, happy, and active as they age.
The Results Speak for Themselves
As an integral part of our reverse-aging protocol, WINPRO helps even super-senior dogs feel better, faster.
Take Lucy, for instance.
When Lucy first came to us, she barely wanted to move. But within weeks of addressing her inflammation by starting her on WINPRO Pet Immune Chews, she transformed.
She went from shuffling slowly around the house…to trotting down the street on short walks…to curling up in bed at night with a look of absolute peace.
She gave us four more beautiful years we never thought we’d get.
Every Dog Deserves This Chance
We know not every pet parent is a hospice foster. But if you have a senior dog at home, or even a younger pup you want to protect as they age—the same principles of healthy aging apply.
Manage inflammation. Support mobility. Protect the immune system.
That’s how you give your dog not just more years, but better years.
Some of the steps are easier than others. But if you want a quick way to get started, I recommend starting your dog on WINPRO’s plasma-powered chews.
Because no matter their age, every dog deserves the chance to thrive.
